Natural Wine Bars in Lisbon

Sippin' Wine, Feeling Fine!

Fancy a nice glass of wine in a cool, cozy place, fancy something a little out of the ordinary? Then you are in the right place. Lisbon offers a great selection of natural wine and tapas bars, often run by young Portuguese people who offer Portuguese wine and a mix of modern European and Portuguese cuisine. So let's dive right in!

Black Sheep is the kind of place you can always fit into your day and is one of my absolute favorites in Lisbon. Either have a glass of wine in the small room by the bar before going to dinner, or come back after dinner and sit with a glass on the Praca da Flores, one of the most romantic places in Lisbon. The concept of the place is simple: there is no food, but the desire to promote small independent winemakers in Portugal. The bartenders are very experienced and you can try up to 4 wines before deciding on one. It is always crowded, even on weekdays, but you can always find a quiet spot in the park. Also worth knowing: the prices for a glass vary between 5-7 Euros, which is quite fair.

Originally from Venice, where the concept of cichetti and apero originated, Vino Vero in Lisbon Graca offers an extensive wine list and great Italian food.  My favorite was a sparkling Italian rosé, similar to a Lambrusco. Vino Vero serves only natural wines and has a rotating menu of small dishes to share with the wine. It is usually busy because it is next to a famous lookout point where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the sunset and relax at a long wooden table by the window. They started doing electronic brunches on the weekends, which is really cool because people get together, sip wine and dance to the music all afternoon. Be sure to reserve your spot!

O Pif has probably the most stylish interior. Their bar and light installation is modern and cool and makes you feel like you are definitely in the right place. Located in Anjos, where everything is new and hip, it is the perfect place to have a drink before dinner. They know their wine and let you try some before you decide. In the summer you can sit outside on the street and watch people go by on their way to dinner or a party.

Located not in the center but in the outskirts of Anjos, near the Arroios metro, this wine bar is still owned by the locals. With more tables outside than inside, this place is perfect when the weather is nice. The owner is a real gem. He let me try so many wines and didn't bother to bring unopened bottles. Really cool: he has this instrument that allows him to keep the bottle closed but pour wine. They also are a vinyl bar that plays tunes on the weekends and serve small bites that looked really good.

A classic among Lisbon's wine bars, this French-owned wine bar is close to the Santos train station (so perfect if you want to dance to EDM at the Santos train station afterwards). They have tables under the trees outside but also inside and the interior is really cozy bistro French like. We tried the food (classic French aperitifs) and were amazed.
If it is too crowded, try Ippoliste and Maciste, just 200m away.

A really cool place in Anjos, with lots of tables outside and a nice vibe, also pretty local.  I was so amazed by the Vinho Verde they had open when I was there that I went back the next day.  The location is right on a busy corner, so it's pretty cool to just sit and watch people.
Inside it is also really cool, loud music and red walls add to the atmosphere. The food was also good, but it is just perfect for drinks on a sunny afternoon with friends.

Magnolia is the right place for everything: coffee, pastries, wine, food.... Located in the most beautiful square in Lisbon (Praca das Flores), you can either sit at one of the tables inside or outside or take your coffee to the square as the locals do. I can't say more than: Go there!

Magnolia is probably the most romantic place for a date in Lisbon. Located in the same place as Black Sheep (Price das Flores), Magnolia is the chic alternative. They also serve food (which is really good) and have cute little tables outside and inside where you can admire the painted ceiling. Of course, they are more expensive than Black Sheep, but if you want to sit in the most beautiful place in Lisbon, this is the place to go.
They are open all day, so if you want a coffee in the morning or lunch, you will be happy here.

Last but not least, Comida Independente is the place to go after work or for weekend lunch. The interior is reminiscent of a fancy farm shop, with huge wine racks and a few wooden tables in between, a counter where you can buy cheese and other locally made products. There's a small, rotating menu of dishes prepared behind the counter that pair well with the wines. So grab your friends, mingle with the locals and have some wine.

Where else to find good natural wine:

  • Ressaca Tropical: perfect if you head to Vago (Dancebar) after
  • Ippolito and Maciste: next to Insaciavel, perfect if you head to Santos Train Station after
  • Holy Wine: more or less a hole in the wall, but really good vibe in Santos
  • Bar Boca: a vegan tapas and wine bar, the place to go if you are vegan
